Pyrus Doyenne du Comice Fan Trained Pear Trees for Sale UK (5) Pyrus Doyenne du Comice Fan Trained Pear Trees for Sale UK (6)

Pyrus Doyenne du Comice is a variety of pear tree that’s known for its glorious blossom and strong fruiting habit. The Comice pear has a melting flesh and sweetness that’s difficult to match. It’s a favourite throughout the UK and a good variety to use as a fan trained fruit tree.

These fan trained pear trees can be grown in smaller gardens against a sunny wall to encourage fruiting. Highly attractive white cup-shaped blossom with speckles bursts through in March and April turning into light green Comice pears around July and September. The RHS have given Doyenne du Comice the award of garden merit and the perfect for pollinators label.

How Hardy Are Pyrus Doyenne du Comice?
Pyrus Doyenne du Comice pear trees are hardy in the UK with good frost resistance, but they do prefer warmer climates and may not fruit in northern parts of the UK.

How To Use Pyrus Doyenne du Comice
Fan trained fruittrees are easier to use than standard or half standard trees because they can be trained against a sunny wall or fence to make the most of warmth. Even without fruiting a fan-trained Pyrus Doyenne du Comice is a beautiful architectural plant all year round.
Grow them directly in the soil or in containers provided you can give them enough water and food in the hot summer months.
If you want to harvest pears then Pyrus Doyenne du Comice requires another different variety of pear tree nearby as it is self sterile. Without this partner it’s unlikely fruit will appear. The following variety should pollinate this pear tree Pyrus Conference

How To Care For Pyrus Doyenne du Comice
Fruiting pear trees need a sunny sheltered position to produce sweet, well-formed fruits. It’s best to position them on a south-facing wall for maximum sun exposure.
When the blossom turns into tiny fruits, thin them out so no two fruits touch and remove any that appear misshapen. This will encourage the remaining fruit to swell and sweeten.
Unlike apples, pears ripen best off the tree, so pick your Doyenne du Comice pears in early to mid October and allow them to ripen indoors.
Mulch your fan trained pear tree every spring and water it thoroughly in dry spells. A large amount of water once a week is preferable to a small amount each day. You’ll need to tie back new growth on fan trained specimens to maintain a good shape. Remove any branches that grow forward or cross over existing ones.
Pear trees are easier to grow than most people imagine, and fan trained pear trees are easier to manage than larger trees. With some care and enough sun you’ll be able to pick your own Pyrus Doyenne du Comice pears at harvest time.
